As shown by $amroc’s latest post, I had an interesting weekend. I spent Thursday and Friday up at Midwest snow fest hurting myself on the bunny slope (first timer), eating vodka gummy bears and playing for drunken snowboarders. Then it was off to play with homie Zebo for the first stop of Red Bull’s JFR tour in Springfield, MO. Definitely got my slice of the good Midwestern life the past couple of days. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, my interview with The Crystal Method is now live on URB.com – peep it here!!
First and foremost – I have to post my unreleased remix of “Diplo Hates You”. This was a version I made that I waffled on and eventually decided to shelve. However, with all the remixes now officially released, I figured it was a good time to let y’all nab it for free! It’s similar to the original, save for an additional synth which adds a little additional intensity and drive. This is also #1 on Hypem right now for the Twitter chart! Download and share that ish.
I just got two remixes sent in by L.A.’s RotBott – both disgustingly evil dubstep remixes. First up is Childish Gambino’s “Heartbeat”, which features an interesting flow with heavy bass and almost an implied beat as the kickdrum hides out in the background. This is angry dubstep, not the kind you bring home to momma. There’s also a mix of Britney Spears’ “I Wanna Go” that follows in step with the previous mix. The drawback here is that the vocals don’t sit well in the mix – at times they pop, though most of the time they fluctuate and are muddled. Guessing in part due to over side chaining based on the ducking volumes? Regardless, it’s always nice when Brit gets a little dirt on her paws, so grab the below and rock out.
This take on Calvin Harris’ “Bounce” came with a note from the remixer. Seoul’s Banana Dynamite writes “if the original was something like caramel popcorn, the remix resembles strawberry milkshake.” Not entirely sure what that means (fuck, I’d say both are equally smooth and delicious), but one thing is for sure, this is one remix that will leave you with an ‘awwwww’ once it, sad to say, comes to a quick end, clocking in at 3:30. With nu-disco elements sitting within an uptempo track, this is the song you want to start a conversation with at the club – seductive, incredibly sexy, but all class.
Comic Strips‘ “Wanna Party” is straightforward enough, but damn it’s done well. Uncomplicated title, banging melodic hook that lies outside the major chord spectrum and a simple enough vocal stab are all this Pittsburgh native needs to well, make you wanna party. The best part is the way it continues to build. There are several points where you think you might have hit the peak, but noooooo, he’s got to rub a little more sandpaper on that synth. You can catch Comic Strips this week at SXSW – tonight at The Madison (307 W. 5th Street) and Saturday the 17th at Republic Live (301 W. 5th Street).
I just happened upon this remix randomly on Soundcloud – one of those right time, right place kind of things. I love everything Maluca anyway so this was a no-brainer, especially since it was uploaded by The Partysquad themselves. Mystique‘s mix of “Lola” features dark synths parrying with brighter percussive tones and the two go back and forth with Maluca’s authoritative voice sprinkled throughout. It’s a nice twist to the original and highly addictive. Make sure you have access to something that will do this remix some justice when you play it.
